Sticky Pork Steak with Soy and Ginger Sauce - Satsuki AUD16

Sticky Pork Steak with Soy and Ginger Sauce - Satsuki AUD16

Our hopes for a good and simple Japanese meal wasn't totally fulfilled today. It seems that Satsuki might have lost their edge for making simple, wholesome Japanese food.

The star of the night was the Kamo Nabe, a rich duck hotpot with glass noodles, Chinese cabbage and enoki mushrooms to soak up the rich duck broth. The duck was wonderfully intense, probably grilled before stewing.

It was preceeded by a rather undercooked Nasu Dengaku which was deep fried rather that grilled, resulting in a pool of oil. Not attractive. The topping tasted more like hoisin sauce than miso. Even the gyoza filling was a letdown today, even though the plump and juicy prawn gyoza were delightful a month ago!

At least the sticky soy and ginger pork was good, even if the sauce was a bit sweet. The zing of ginger went very well with the tender, juicy pork steaks.

Maybe the food has slipped a little. Maybe that's why Satsuki was merely full tonight, and not overcrowded with people waiting for takeaways.

1960s Kitsch Housewife Cookbooks Set Of Two
$20One book is titled "Metropolitan Cookbook" dated 1964. The other is titled "Budget Cooking For Company" dated 1965. In the yellow book, the photographs are completely adorable and true to the 1960s era with smiling cartoon food illustrations. A lot of the recipes are modern, though a lot are also not modern household dishes for our day. Some recipes include- Puttin-On-The-Ritz Chocolate Pie, Butterscotch Pecan Pie, Sweet Potato Sausage Loaf, Walnut Cheese Logs, Broiled Swordfish Steaks, Peach Cobbler, and Six Egg Sponge Cake. There are a few great pages on how to make homemade frosting and salad dressings- which completely caught my attention! The green book stands up into a tent-style for easier reading while cooking.

The yellow book is 7 3/4" x 5 3/8"
Green book is 7 1/4" x 4 1/4"

Steamed Acorn Squash with Cashew Nut Dressing

Steamed Acorn Squash with Cashew Nut Dressing

HyeRyung found this simple dish in a Korean Vegan cookbook she recently picked up online (??? ??? ??,? ??? ??, Song Hak Uhn and Kim Ok Kyung's Natural Dinner Table)

The squash are simply chopped and steamed for about 20 minutes or until fork tender. The Cashew Nut Sauce(the book actually calls it Mayonnaise) contains the following:

- One Lemon
- 60g Cashew Nuts
- 25g Onions
- 4Tbspns Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 5Tbspns Honey
- 1tspn Sea Salt
- 1/2tspn Minced Garlic

Once you've assembled the ingredients, just throw them into a food processor and blend until smooth. As with anything, follow your instincts and make any adjustments to the ingredients accordingly.

i promise this will not turn into a 365 stream filled with books! but i was so excited that my new cookbook, the famed, Mastering The Art Of French Cooking by Julia Child arrived that i had to snap a picture.

it was one of my christmas gifts from my mom - actually, she bought me volume 2 since volume 1 was sold out at the store. but i returned it, ordered volume 1 online & within days it was at my door.

this is perhaps one of the most famous recipes in the book. my goal is to make at least two recipes a month. perhaps they'll be my pictures of the day.
